NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly Wins “2011 Bull Connor Award”

Watch Us Punk The World’s Top Cop

As Kelly left the hall with his guard, members of Stop Stop & Frisk, #OWS, and Columbia students and an alum presented him with his certificate for excellence in relentlessly hounding blacks and Latinos (2000/day) while defending the privileges and interests of white heterosexual males.

I’ve answered a call put out by Carl Dix and Cornel West: I’ve been getting arrested in demonstrations of civil disobedience in protest of the illegitimate, illegal, and racist practice of Stop & Frisk – an issue now in the public debate.

Of recent police violence against unarmed protesters, Kelly has said few words – and most of them smugly.

On November 29th, when Commissioner Kelly surfaced to guest lecture at Columbia’s SIPA – School of International & Public Affairs, it was my privilege to serve him his certificate and inform him he’d won the 2011 Bull Connor Award.

Bull Connor was Alabama’s Commissioner of Public Safety whose attack dogs bit children, and his hoses pinned children to walls.

700,000 people will be Stopped & Frisked in NYC this year, most of them non-white and the overwhelming majority  of them – over 90% – completely innocent. As the brother from Occupy the Hood says, “this policy doesn’t have to end now. It has to end right now.”

As we all go broke together, we seem to be more than willing to try out new ideas. I am newly interested in vermicomposting and protesting. My curiosity is getting the better of me!
